What is the Medium of Teaching and Learning in the MATATAG Curriculum?

The MATATAG Curriculum has been designed with every student in mind. The Department of Education understands that the Philippines is a diverse country with many religions, ethnicities, nationalities, and cultures. Therefore, special attention has been paid to developing the MOTL (medium of teaching and learning) to make it easy for every student to study.

MATATAG Medium of Teaching and Learning

Mode of Teaching and Learning for Kinder & Grade 1

Undoubtedly, Kindergarten and Grade 1 are the initial stages of education. Students are very young in these two classes. Hence, sticking to one dominant language can become a problem providing quality education. Moreover, there isn’t any formal and outlined study in these grades.

Key Stage 1 – Grade 2 and Grade 3

In these grades, there will be a transition from the dominance of the learner’s first language to English and Filipino. The use of first language is still recommended where it is needed to make learning easy, smooth and effective.

This approach fosters a supportive environment for Filipino students, helping them build confidence and understanding as they acquire new languages.

Key Stage 2 – Grade 4, 5 and 6

Again, the focus is on English and Filipino as a medium of teaching and learning in the key stage 2. However, the learner’s first language will be used as the auxiliary medium when required. This leverage is given to ensure that both the teaching and learning are effectively done.

Key Stage 3 – Grade 7 to 10

The MOTL (method of teaching and learning) in grades 7 – 10 is going to be Filipino and English. Wherever and whenever required, the first language of the learners will be used to teach. This approach ensures better comprehension and inclusivity, especially for students in diverse linguistic regions.

Not only has it made education more fun, interactive and interesting, but it has also paved the way for the Filipino student to stand on par with any international student.
